Empty App Screens That Guide Users

An empty app screen should tell the user what to do next. The first step is to identify why the screen is empty: there are no records yet, the user lacks permission, or a loading failure occurred. Each cause needs a different message and action. This guide covers those distinctions, first-use examples, and Arabic copy considerations.

Why the screen is empty

An empty screen is not a single condition. It can mean the user has not created any records, does not have permission to view them, or the app failed to load data. Treating these as one generic empty state confuses users and hides real problems.

For example, a sales app might show an empty list because the user is new and has no leads, because their role restricts access to leads, or because the network request timed out. The right message and action differ for each case.

First-use empty states

When a user first opens a screen with no data, the empty state should explain what will appear here and how to add the first item. Use a clear headline, a short sentence, and a primary button. Avoid jargon and keep the tone helpful.

Suppose a project management app shows an empty task list. The message could say: No tasks yet. Add your first task to start tracking work. The button says Add task. This tells the user exactly what to do.

For Arabic interfaces, write the empty state in Modern Standard Arabic and ensure the layout mirrors correctly for right-to-left reading. The button and any icons should also flip. A common mistake is to translate the text but leave the layout left-to-right, which feels broken to Arabic readers.

No permission

When the user lacks permission, the empty state should not look like a call to action they cannot complete. Instead, explain that access is restricted and suggest who to contact. For example: You do not have permission to view this list. Contact your administrator for access.

Do not show an Add button if the user cannot add items. That creates frustration. If there is a path to request access, provide a button that opens a request form or sends an email.

Loading failure

A loading failure is different from an empty list. The user may have data, but the app could not retrieve it. The empty state should say something like: Could not load data. Check your connection and try again. Include a Retry button.

Do not show the same message as a true empty state. If the user has records but sees No items yet, they may think their data was lost. That erodes trust. Distinguish between no data and failed data.

Writing and testing the copy

Write the empty state copy in plain language. For each cause, define the headline, body, and action. Then test with real users or team members who are not familiar with the app. Ask them what they think the screen means and what they would do next.

A practical test: show the empty state to someone who has never seen the app. If they cannot tell you why the screen is empty and what to do, the copy needs work. This test works for both English and Arabic versions.

For Arabic, involve a native speaker to check that the phrasing is natural and that the right-to-left layout is correct. Avoid literal translations that sound awkward. The goal is clarity, not word-for-word equivalence.

Tradeoffs and practical tips

Adding detailed empty states takes design and development time. But it reduces support requests and user confusion. Prioritize the most common empty screens: first-use, no permission, and loading failure.

Keep the design consistent across the app. Use the same structure for each empty state: an icon or illustration, a headline, a short body, and one primary action. This helps users recognize the pattern.

For Arabic, ensure that any illustrations or icons are not culturally inappropriate and that text expansion does not break the layout. Test on real devices with Arabic locale settings.

Finally, review empty states after launch. User feedback and analytics can reveal if the copy is unclear or if users are stuck. Update as needed.
